Fans of the Philadelphia Mummers will be pleased to know they are getting support from The Bacon Brothers Band, who has donated their time and talent to record a “Save The Mummers” CD/DVD to help save the annual Mummers Parade. Philadelphia native musicians Kevin and Michael Bacon came home to Philadelphia this past June to re-record their original song “New Year’s Day” with a stellar group of Mummers, representing all 16 string bands in their Association. The “Save the Mummers” CD/DVD includes this new recording performed with an all-star Mummers’ String Band playing banjos, saxophones, accordions, base fiddles, and glockenspiel. The disc also includes footage from the recording session and past Mummers parades. Since this annual Philadelphia tradition has faced cuts in city funding, like other cultural events and institutions in the city, the Bacon Brothers have launched an initiative to help save a parade that has been enjoyed by so many people for more than 100 years. On October 10th, the CD/DVD will be available for purchase for the first time at Main Street Music and elsewhere. Check for details at www.savethemummers.com. All proceeds from the sale of the CD/DVD will be used for operating costs for the 2010 Mummers Parade. For the Bacon Brothers, their desire to help save the Mummers’ parade was a labor of love for a city and its great tradition.

ABOUT THE PHILADELPHIA MUMMERS
To define them simply, Mummers are costumed entertainers welcoming in the New Year. The tradition of Philadelphia Mummery started in the late 17th century as a continuation of the Old World customs of ushering in the New Year. The City of Philadelphia sponsored and organized the first official Mummers Parade on January 1, 1901. The Philadelphia Mummers of today total over 10,000 marchers. The parade is still held on New Year's Day and televised nationally, with four distinct divisions: Comic, Fancy, Fancy Brigade and String Band. Although, Mummers are known best for the parade on New Year's Day, they perform year round. In November 2008, the Mummers learned that the City of Philadelphia was cutting the prize money for the parade and also asked the Mummers to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for city services related to the parade. Thanks to their fans, the 2009 parade did go on. SavetheMummers.com is the official 501(c)(3) organization formed to raise money for the purpose of producing the parade that faces new challenges though cuts in the city budget.
