Back in 1910, when airplanes were a novelty and most Americans had never
seen man fly, a series of "Aero Meets" were sponsored across the United
States to showcase the great fliers of the day. Atlantic City and Asbury
Park were two stages for the shows in the summer of 1910.
The Flying Fearless exhibit will feature duplicates of Atlantic City
Free Public Library Heston Collection and Asbury Park Public Library
photographs from 1910. The exhibit at Atlantic City International
Airport will be displayed in the airport terminal building as part of
the Artport program.
Sponsored by the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which owns and
operates the Atlantic City International Airport, Artport engages the
community by showcasing New Jersey and all it has to offer through
dynamic exhibitions.
The Atlantic City and Asbury Park libraries also plan to offer exhibits
at the Atlantic City Historical Museum on Garden Pier, Township of Ocean
Historical Museum in Ocean Township (Monmouth County) and online at
www.njairshows1910.org.
Those visiting the physical exhibits can see enlarged shots of aviation
pioneers Glenn Curtiss and Walter Brookins flying high above the
Atlantic City skyline and beach. The Flying Fearless website,
www.njairshows1910.org, will feature a virtual exhibit, along with a
history of the New Jersey airshows and timeline of major airshow moments
and milestones.
The Atlantic City Free Public Library, which is a service of the City of
Atlantic City, is an official sponsor of the 2010 Atlantic City Airshow
"Thunder Over the Boardwalk."
