The Isley Brothers, led by Ronald Isley, have been at the forefront of popular music for nearly 50 years, beginning with their 1959 classic, “Shout”. The original brothers – Ronald, Rudolph, Kelly and Vernon - began singing together as youngsters in 1950, performing in churches and other venues first as a gospel group in their hometown of Cincinnati. Over the years the original group expanded to include more family members, and their popularity exploded after the Grammy Award-winning single and #1 Billboard R&B hit “It’s Your Thing” was released in 1969. Their career has seen dozens of #1 singles and albums, more than two dozen gold, platinum and multi-platinum releases, countless awards and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. They have collaborated with numerous artists, such as R Kelly, and their hits have been covered by the world’s top contemporary pop, R&B and hip hop stars. Their other hits include chart-toppers “Fight The Power (Part 1),” from 1975, and “Don’t Say Goodnight (It’s Time For Love),” from 1980, as well as the songs “That Lady (Part 1)” (1973), “The Heat Is On” (1975), “Take Me To The Next Phase” (1978), “I Wanna Be With You” (1979), “Smooth Sailin’ Tonight” (1987) and “Spend The Night” (1989).
Acknowledging their place in history, Ronald Isley says: “I knew Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson and The Temptations. I knew their intimate thoughts on music, and I knew them as friends. The Isley Brothers are in a unique place now because we possess that repository of knowledge, and we carry it on through our new material. Ernie and I understand what a tremendous opportunity and responsibility that is, how special that is. The Lord has truly blessed us, and we continue to be led to a greater place.”
Returning to Boardwalk Hall for a third appearance, Teena Marie is a Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and producer. Marie, nicknamed "Lady T", is a blue-eyed soul protegé of the late funk legend Rick James. She sings R&B with big, robust vocals, and is proficient on rhythm guitar. She also has written, produced, sung and arranged virtually all of her songs since her 1980 release "Irons in the Fire". Songs that have made her famous include "I'm Just a Sucker for Your Love", a duet with Rick James, "Square Biz ", "Still In Love" (a duet with the late Gerald Levert), and "A Rose By Any Other Name". Teena Marie was nominated in 2005 for the Grammy Award Best R&B Female Vocal Performance for her song "Still In Love". Her newest album, "Congo Square", a very personal and jazz-influenced collection of songs, was released in mid-2009.
The Whispers are a veteran R&B quintet with an impressive 23-year legacy of R&B hits. Formed in Los Angeles by twins Walter and Wallace Scott, Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon (who left in 1973). The Whispers turned up on the Dore label in 1964 with "I Was Born When You Kissed Me." In 1969, the quintet climbed the soul charts for the first time with "The Time Has Come" on Soul Clock, and they cracked the R&B Top Ten the next year with "Seems Like I
Gotta Do Wrong." They've remained hitmakers ever since for the labels Janus, Soul Train, and Solar, with smashes like the solid gold chart-topper "And the Beat Goes On" in 1980 and another number one urban contemporary hit, "Rock Steady," in 1987. After being their backbone and selling point since the group's inception, twin lead vocalists Walter and Wallace Scott took time out for solo careers in 1993, but remain with the Whispers. A number of hit songs include "And the Beat Goes On," "It's A Love Thing," "Lady, " "Rock Steady," and "Innocent".
